Published by: Adam Żeberkiewicz

On November 23 this year a workshop entitled "The Future of Metrology" was held at the headquarters of the European Commission in Brussels, devoted to the development of metrology and its selected most important areas that are expected to play an important role in the future.

The panelists included representatives of the European Commission, including Peter Dröll, Director Prosperity, DG Research and Innovation, Maguelonne Chambone, Vice-Chair of EURAMET, Elsa Batista from the National Institute of Metrology of Portugal (IPQ), as well as representatives of European industry, including: Dr. Katrin Sjöberg, Technical Advisor, Volvo Autonomous Solutions.

During the first part of the meeting, the presenters emphasized the role of the European Partnership in Metrology in supporting European industry. Maguelonne Chambone emphasized the uniqueness of the EPM program, which, as a continuator of the EMPIR program, enables, through the synergy effect, the development of individual projects that would not be possible within single National Metrological Institutions. As an example of what the European Union is doing to strengthen the strength of European industry is the European Chips Act - it will increase Europe's competitiveness and resilience in semiconductor technologies and applications and help achieve the digital and green transitions.

An important speech was that of Dr. Elsa Batista, who, using the example of the EMPIR project she coordinated, concerning devices measuring micro flows, showed the essence of cooperation between Metrological Institutions from various EU countries. In the part regarding the green deal, the GUM representative emphasized the importance of EU support and cooperation of national authorities in supporting broadly understood solutions in the field of green deal. He mentioned the investment financed in 90% by the EU, i.e. the Świętokrzyskie Laboratory Campus, where research will also be carried out in this area, the Polish Metrology project and the implementation of doctorate program.

During the meeting, the chairman of EURAMET, Dr. Jörn Stenger, also spoke, discussing the role of EURAMET as the Regional Metrological Organization, and Dr. Dietrich Imkamp as a representative of ZEISS factory.
