Visit of Prof. Alistair Forbes in GUM

On 8th June in GUM we hosted Professor Alistair Forbes, mathematician from National Physical Laboratory (NPL, United Kingdom), world leading National Metrology Institute.
Professor Forbes gave a very interesting lecture “Confidence in measurement, confidence in data – the role of the mathematical sciences”. During the meeting prof. Forbes discussed also role of the big British companies using mathematical services offered by NPL. After the lecture, participants asked many questions concerning the role of mathematics in general metrology and defining the uncertainty in measurement as well as questions about NPL strategy, cooperation with the industry. The second meeting in GUM, on 12th June was devoted to technical questions concerning creating new mathematical unit in GUM.
